Better Late Than never!

Sunday, March 8, 2015

I haven't meant to abandon my blog for so long. I have been buried not only in snow but in one little project after another that gobbles up my time.

It's exhausting!

The winter continues to be extraordinary! The snow is one thing. And we've had a lot of it. (Not that I'm complaining--I like snow).  But we've had sub zero temperatures day in and day out! And if that isn't enough to frazzle one's nerves, the wind has been very wild. Howling wind has the distinction of making everything harder and scarier. And oh yes: colder.

In spite of all of the work that winter has required this year, my brumby has seemed just fine!

Horses are so amazing. How do they stay warm when the windchill is -40 and the temps are under zero? I suppose with the right gear anything is possible. Like a fuzzy coat, a belly full of hay and a body like a furnace.

All the horses have been doing so well in fact that they let themselves out of their pasture twice and went running off totally unescorted! This is NOT what you want your horses to do. WAY TOO SCARY and STRESSFUL. Bill had to amp up the electric fences with extra line and more juice. Luckily, there have not been any more naughty incidents. The last thing I want is for any of these guys to get lost or hurt...or to [unintentionally] hurt someone else.

When it has not been too cold, or too icy, I have been getting some quality brumby time in.

On days it has been too slick to ride, we'd go walking together.

Every once in a while there will be a day that has been perfect for riding! This picture was taken a few weekends ago. That's Bill on Willie the Arab. On this particular day Lilly wanted to run!

I always love riding by the Archie MacLeish house! Look how pretty it looks!

When I have not been riding, I've been looking for interesting photo opportunities.

And Lilly has been finding her own things to do....such as inspecting Bill's tractor tires.

One very nice thing about winter: No bugs! No mud fever! No soft squishy soles on Lilly's feet because she's been standing in the swampy part of the field all day! No feeling like you might pass out because the humidity is trying to take you down! Nope, there's been none of that. It's been very cold. But it's also been very beautiful.

And check this out! My friend Karen P gave me this shirt for Christmas which I LOVE! I recently wore it to work where I snapped this photo. Aren't those pink curlie-cues awesome?

This is me saying to Bill, "Is the flash on? Are you using the flash?"

And this is Bill saying, "I wish had not forgotten to put the truck in four-wheel drive."

I hope everyone out there in bloggingland and beyond has been enjoying February and early March!

I'm sure we have a few more weeks+++ of winter left.

Stay warm until next time!

You are such a doll! I love these photos too, great job. They really made me help feel like i had a winter because we got completely passed over in the snow department this year! I love that you walk when it's not safe to ride. I've become a huge advocate for hand walking my horses! It's a really great way to build some trust and confidence and face some scary things together, or, just relax and enjoy a stroll in a different way (and that exercises my tush a bit better too, LOL!) Are you on Instagram or FB? Let me know how else we can connect, I'm on both a lot. Send me an email ranchgirldiaries@gmail.com. Stay warm!
