Sorry I didn't get a comment in on the bad brumby post. I do think the weather has something to do with it. My Boy was as mellow as an old nag on the frozen slippery ground a few days ago. After the thaw set in, wowsers, he was nuts on the longe line. Do you longe Lily before you ride? A lot of people do that every time they ride. I guess it depends on the horse. I do sometimes, especially when he hasn't been ridden in a while or seems full of it. It just warms him up and gets those "kinks" and bucks out so he can settle in and work nicely for me. In the summer, I can just get on and go since he's been worked more frequently.
Also, I am not a trainer by any means, but I am not sure that just changing the bit could completely change her behavior? Yes, maybe you have a bit more leverage in the TT, but if she was being so foul that day (crow-hopping and galloping) there had to have been another cause that day- whether physical discomfort or just feeling overly antsy. But she should be just as well-behaved and respectful in that snaffle as in the tom thumb. I think I come from the school where you don't just use a tougher bit when a horse isn't behaving. Rather, you get to the root of the issue. I think a horse should be able to be just as responsive and respectful in a snaffle, curb, or a simple halter and leadrope as reins. Not that my horse can be ridden as well in a halter and leadrope, LOL! Yet! But that is my goal! :)
Anyway, I am glad to hear she was back to herself and I wish you two darlings many safe and fun rides in 2010!! :)
